Chloe Carter https://chloecarterart.com/Artist-Statement Artist Statement Chloe Carter is a Hampshire based artist. Investigating the body in relation to the post-industrial environment that we are living through. Through her interdisciplinary practice Carter fuses sculpture, textile, photography and science to make her work. Carter invents as a way of making sense of the world around us. Some of the biggest questions our generation face is how can we save the Earth and reverse the damage we have caused in the age of the Anthropocene? What does the future of the Anthropocene hold? And what adaptations and compromises are we going to have to make as we face the ecological crisis? She tries to see how the artist can respond to these issues, as it is a universal trauma. We see constantly see the effects such as extinctions and wildfires, which would have previously been once in a lifetime event. Using scientific knowledge and research on material reflects an activist passion of making an environmentally sustainable and conscious revolution. Using earths own natural resources rather than relying on man-made polymers. Taking a political stance in regard to the environment and creating an alternative to short-lived low-cost items that exacerbate plastic pollution, air and water pollution and create green house gases that contribute to global warming. Carter often making samples of bioplastics as a way of researching her material through making. Exploring different combinations of ingredients to see how they affect the overall material. Both art and science requiring creativity to further develop new and innovative ways of working and making. While her work is interested in the science and process behind making materials, the artist is particularly interested in the history of mass production, in particular the industrial revolution, and how mass production stemmed from it, England having previously relied on small ‘cottage industries’, factory production was initiated and allowed us to own far more than ever before. Over time this has had a detrimental effect on the planet. Through her works the artist explores ways in which we will overcome overconsumption and how we will learn to live with less. Carter uses the idea of the body within some of her works, particularly working with the abject. The abject being used to create an unsettling view of the body, that has typically been used with Feminist art. Rather than depicting the perceived beautiful human form, that through history has been portrayed as the ideal. How can we portray the body as beautiful when we are aware of the catastrophic things human kind are capable of, the works needed to be an uncomfortable confrontation of the damage the human has created. The materials from the bioplastics coming from the Earth, the biggest body that we can possibly imagine. They also create a skin like texture and slowly will change over time, like real skin, which again evokes this notion of being a body. Finally, we associate textiles with fabric, we spend our lives constantly around cloths constantly wrapped in fabric and see our clothes as our second skin. Retrieving the hand of the artist as we become ever more dependent on technology and machinery, working to slow down and speed up the process of making as a result of working across so many different mediums.
